On August 3, Haohai Biological Technology released an announcement saying that the company’s product “linear cross-linked sodium hyaluronate gel for intraocular filling” which is used to block retinal tears for treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was officially subjected to clinical trial on July 31, 2020. This clinical trial has progressed so rapidly that it only took more than a month for the clinical trial protocol to pass the review and approval of the team leader’s ethics committee on October 17 of the same year since the clinical trial protocol discussion meeting was held on September 5 of the last year. Thereafter, despite the suspension of ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment operations of hospitals across the country due to the COVID-19, the company lost no time to make adjustments and started the clinical trial last Friday. This clinical trial will be conducted at 7 famous hospitals across the country, expected to complete within 2-3 years.

 

What’s retinal tear blocking bio-gel?

The “linear cross-linked sodium hyaluronate gel for intraocular filling”, an international innovative technology, is mainly used to block retinal tears for treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

 

Characterized by acute onset and rapid development, this disease, once occurring, will cause vision of patients to rapidly decline and its blinding rate is almost 100% if not treated in time and effectively. According to the “Preferred Practice Pattern (PPP,) 3rd edition, 2018”, the incidence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is 10-18 persons/100,000 population, meaning that about 140,000 to 250,000 people contract this disease in China each year.

 

What’s innovative about retinal tear blocking bio-gel?

 

Compared with the traditional treatment for retinal tear blocking that requires patients to keep a prone position for 1-3 months after surgery in order for vitreouscavity fillings (generally being gas fillings or silicone fillings) to support and press retina so as to help retinas to be physiologically and functionally replaced. The use of the retinal tear blocking bio-gel, however, can avoid the suffering of patients required to lie prostrate for a long time after surgery without the need for additional fillings for top pressure, extremely facilitating the recovery and normal life of patients
